Out on the Farm
October 10, 2006
Each weekend in October see the Swift clan travel out to Warragul, about 125km’s east of Melbourne. Each year my wife’s mum and dad ‘farm sit’ a beautiful 80 acre property of a relative. It is a fantastic place (save for the struggle with the traffic on the Monash freeway on Friday nights).
The farm has about 80 head of cattle, some chooks, a dog and a fantastic view of Mt Baw Baw. It gives us an opportunity to spend time with my wife’s parents, and soak up some peace and quiet.
My son especially enjoys feeding and collecting eggs from, the chooks. Even though he is a ‘city kid’ he knows where milk, eggs and meat come from. One day we hope to buy a 10 acres hobby farm and live the ‘tree change’ dream. The first weekend saw my mum and dad come down for a visit. It was one of the best weekends I have spent with mum and dad in a long while. It was great to see them relax, smile, drink a few beers/wines, eat and laugh. That pretty well sums up the weekend for all of us. My son also got to spend some quality time with both sets of grandparents.
Last weekend saw us celebrate my wife’s birthday, and again it was a great day. We had cousins and uncles and aunties pay a visit for another day of laughter, food and a few wines/beers.
Living away from our immediate family is tough, but being able to spend these days together has been great.
