Mini Reunion
Unless you live under a rock, you would know that yesterday (7th November) saw the Melbourne Cup being run here in Australia. The Melbourne Cup is described as the race that stops a nation. Whilst I wouldn’t call myself a race fan, it is hard not to have a bet, plus the day is a public holiday if you live in Melbourne.
Last October (2005) my year 10 class had a 20 year reunion. So the family and I travelled up to my home town and spent a couple of days there. The reunion itself was fantastic. Up until that point I hadn’t kept in touch with these guys. After that night I realised what great friends I had in school. I found out that a couple of them also lived very near to me in Melbourne.
Since then we have caught up with each other every month. Unfortunately two other close mates hadn’t been able to make it. So after help from another school friend I found them, one lives in Singapore and the other lives just out of Melbourne.
So with the public holiday, we took the opportunity to have a mini-reunion. We had a great day. I hadn’t seen Greg since his 21st birthday. It was great to catch-up with him and his family and we all slipped into the comfort zone that good friends do very quickly. The other guys bought their families and we had a BBQ in the backyard.
We shared a meal, shared a drink or two (I can still taste the chilli flavoured tequila) ,reminisced, told our respective stories about the last 15 years and generally joked with each other for the afternoon. A highlight for me was seeing all of our kids playing and mucking about in the backyard.
Overall it was a great day; with many more to be enjoyed I’m sure. So a big thanks to everyone for turning up, my wife for helping with the set up and foods, plus Mel, Claire and Becki for their delightful dishes that complimented the BBQ meats perfectly!!
Now all we need to do is get Simon over here or organise a visit to Singapore!!
