V8 SuperCars- Pukekohe Preview

This weekend sees the final V8 SuperCar race at the Pukekohe race track in
New Zealand. Next years fly away race in the land of the long white cloud will be a street race in Hamilton.

Always a chance at this round will be stalwart and passionate Kiwi Greg Murphy who has won four out of the seven rounds at Pukekohe so far and after last years terrible race which saw him involved in a big shunt on the first turn, he will along with the other Kiwi’s in the V8 series, attempting to write his own bit of history by becoming the last man to win at the circuit.

Of course the big guns will all be firing such as the Kelly brothers (Rick and Todd), Garth Tander, James Courtney, Mark Skaife.

However I see this as a crucial round for Ford start Craig Lowndes in the Team Vodafone 888 Falcon. Whilst he has consistently scored points in each of the 5 races this year, he is languishing in 9th place, with the current leader Rick Kelly more than double his points on 115 points to Craig’s 50 points so far. This is made worse by the fact that this year drivers will not be able to drop their worst round, so while consistency is a key this year, it will be no good if you have been consistently scoring low points.

In the last two years Craig has come tantalisingly close to claiming the crown for Ford, and who could forget the final race at Phillip Island in 2006, but he really has to break free of the bridesmaids tag and bag the trophy in 2007.

Lowndes started his career in 1996 racing for Holden in the Holden Racing Team (HRT) VR Commodore and won his debut V8 championship and in that same year winning Bathurst and Sandown to give him the ‘Triple Crown’.

He took a break in 1997 to try his chances in Europe, and returned in ’98 and again won the championship and followed this up with a back to back in 1999. Since moving to Ford he has had some up and down seasons but seems to have found himself again at 888 Racing Team.

The guy knows how to win and is a true racer. In my humble opinion is the best since Peter Brock, but I believe this year is somewhat a make or break.

With young guns such as the Kelly boys, Jamie Whincup, Will Davison and James Courtney quickly coming to terms with what it takes to win races and championships, Lowndes like others in the series really need to stamp their influence on the series now.

My tips for the weekend are; Lowndes, Murphy, Rick Kelly, James Courtney and anyone with a little Kiwi heritage.

As always look out for more reporting over the weekend for race results and comments and feel free to hop over to http://www.sportingo.com and got to ‘More Sports’for my and others sport news.

Chuck Norris Facts

Fact # 73 Chuck Norris was the fourth Wise man. He brought baby Jesus the gift of "beard". Jesus wore it proudly to his dying day. The other Wise men, jealous of Jesus' obvious gift favouritism, used their combined influence to have Chuck omitted from the Bible. Shortly after all three died of roundhouse kick related deaths.
